On Tuesday, October 15th, at 2 pm EST, the Niskanen Center hosted a virtual panel on our report, Family Tax Benefits in America: 2023 Report Card.
Families with young children may be eligible for numerous benefits to support them both in and out of work. However, access to these benefits can vary widely depending on factors such as earnings, marital status, children’s ages, and where a family lives. This patchwork system is often so complex that social scientists, advocates, and policymakers tend to focus on individual programs rather than examining the system as a whole.
In their report, authors Joshua McCabe and Julia Pelletier offer a more comprehensive look at the most common family benefits, their impact on family resources, and how they support families through changing employment circumstances.
In this virtual event, the panelists:
- Provide a brief overview of the report’s findings
- Offer a state-by-state breakdown of total benefit levels and implicit marginal taxes rates families face as their earnings increase
- Discuss key takeaways for families, policymakers, and advocates across California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, and Vermont.
