Karl Smith is a Senior Fellow at the Niskanen Center. He is an expert in public finance, political economy, and international monetary economics. He was previously Assistant Professor of Economics and Government at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Government. While at UNC, he founded the highly regarded economics blog, Modeled Behavior. There, he provided extensive analysis on the global financial crisis, the Greek debt crisis, the U.S. long-term fiscal imbalance, and the implications of artificial intelligence and advanced technology on the future of growth and wages. He has also published analysis and commentary in the Financial Times, The Washington Post, Foreign Policy, Foreign Affairs, Forbes, and The Atlantic. He holds both a B.S. and Ph.D. in economics from North Carolina State University.
