WASHINGTON, D.C. March 26, 2019—The Niskanen Center remains encouraged by today’s re-introduction of the bipartisan DREAM Act by Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Dick Durbin (D-IL). We hope that it will renew productive negotiations about how to tackle one of the most challenging public policy issues.

“The introduction of bipartisan legislation is a positive first step,” said Kristie De Peña, Niskanen’s director of immigration & senior counsel. “But we need more lawmakers to come forward and introduce their own legislation that tackles issues that have emerged since 2017, including protection for the TPS population.”

Additional new considerations may include: asylum reform, detention practices, licensure changes for immigrants with work authorization, and protection for Liberians with Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) who will lose status at the end of March.

“We commend the lawmakers on both sides of the aisle for continuing to seek bipartisan immigration solutions, and look forward to continuing to engage on the issue,” De Peña added.
