The life and legacy of the late Mark Kleiman are at the heart of the Niskanen Center’s Criminal Justice department. As the subtitle of Mark’s seminal 2009 book When Brute Force Fails suggests, it is possible to have both less crime and less punishment. That book has become a source of inspiration to scholars and practitioners throughout the criminal justice system, and Niskanen was honored to host a dinner to commemorate the 15th anniversary of its publication. The program featured remarks by Mark’s former student, RAND Drug Policy Research Center Co-Director Beau Kilmer. Niskanen Senior Fellow Matt Ygelsias then led a panel discussion between Stanford Psychologist Keith Humphreys and Megan McArdle of the Washington Post.

We are grateful to Mark’s many friends and colleagues who were able to join us in Washington for the event. We are also grateful to those who could not attend but sent video tributes.

Please enjoy select media highlights from the event below. These include the recording of the event, a video tribute, and several photos.
